I recently had the pleasure of speaking with a book club in
New Hampshire. The members were well read, enthusiastic, and attentive. They
asked thoughtful questions, and everyone contributed to a lively discussion.
But one question, at the end, startled me. The question? Do you have a favorite
book?
After more than twenty-five years of talking about writing
and books to different kinds of audiences, you would think I’d have heard every
question a listener could ask, and that I’d be ready for any surprises. But you’d
be wrong on both counts. The answer, however, was easy.
Yes, I have a favorite book—the one that has just come out,
this year or last year or next year. And right now that book is When Krishna Calls, the fourth Anita Ray
mystery.
Early one morning, before Hotel Delite is abuzz with foreign
guests, a worker finds a strange child sleeping in the hotel compound. Anita
recognizes the child as the daughter of a sometime worker for the hotel, Nisha.
Soon afterward the police come looking for the woman, to question her about the
stabbing death of her husband. Anita refuses to believe that Nisha had anything
to do with her husband’s death, but she is then faced with evidence that Nisha
and her husband were involved with unscrupulous moneylenders.
Anita is drawn into the search for Nisha when she discovers
a message left for her inside her camera. Before Anita knows it, the threat
that led to one man’s death becomes a threat to her own family. And there is no
guarantee that she and Auntie Meena will be spared.

I’m giving away ARCs (uncorrected proof copies) to two
people who comment on this blog, to be chosen at random by my lab-mix Rob. The
dog will be asked to respond to the names as I read them out. (Since he spends so
much of his time watching me work, I thought I'd give him a chance to
contribute.)

How could I pass up the opportunity to be picked by a dog?
ReplyDeleteAnd a lovely dog he is too!

ReplyDeleteI would have to say Dorothy Dunnett's Game of Kings is my favorite as one of few books I have read more than once.
ReplyDeleteI'll have to put this on my TBR list. Thanks for commenting.
DeleteSounds like a fascinating read. Nice to meet another author and series to add to my list. doward1952@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteWelcome, Doward.
DeleteAlways hard to pick a favorite...mine is normally The Visionary but then I love Tempered Dreams and Circles of Fate and...well you get my gist LOL!
ReplyDeleteGreat post.
Good luck and God's Blessing.

Thanks, Pam. Some questions can't be answered definitively, but we try.
DeleteSusan,
ReplyDeleteI love your method for a fair drawing! I usually ask my next door neighbor to do it since she doesn't know any of the commentators or I put every name on a slip of paper, place in a hat, and have my husband draw at random. Maybe I ought to get a dog!
Congrats on getting the ARCs--always a thrill.
After months of work, holding the ARC or the finished book always seems such a thrill, It never gets old. This is a new task for our dog, so we'll see how he does.
DeleteA Tree Grows in Brooklyn is one of my favorite books. I would love to read When Krishna Calls! Thank you for the giveaway!

Thanks for the title and thanks for stopping by to take a chance.
DeleteA message inside a camera reminds me of my new short story about a message left inside a stained glass birdhouse. My favorite book is my own Vineyard Prey, third in my Shakespeare in the Vineyard because I learn more about writing with each book I write. I'd love to read your new book.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite book is, of course, the one I just finished or just had published. I feel like the mother who's asked about a favorite child and she answers, the one who's late for supper. Thanks for stopping by and taking a chance.
